Practice
Practice at Tokonomato is grounded in studio-based work and material inquiry. Artists are primarily supported in developing their own work within individual studios, working with the media and approaches central to their practice.
A shared workspace is available for those interested in engaging with Japanese ink (sumi) and related materials such as washi. Basic materials are provided, and artists may choose to explore these as an additional aspect of their residency, extending their work beyond familiar mediums.
Additional activities, including visiting artists, artist talks, guest-led workshops, and informal discussions, take place periodically and remain secondary to the core studio-focused residency.
While not central to the program, these activities reflect an intention to engage with the surrounding community, opening the space to broader forms of exchange and dialogue.

All residency options include studio access, utilities, shared facilities, and a private room for accommodation.
Notes on the Residency Model
Tokonomato is not a grant-based or instructional residency. Fees support the maintenance and operation of studios, accommodation, and exhibition spaces, allowing the residency to function sustainably while remaining artist-run.
