Residency Program, Fees & Application

Overview

Tokonomato operates as a self-funded, artist-run residency program. Fees are based on studio configuration, accommodation, and length of stay. The program hosts a small number of residents at a time to support focused, studio-based work.

While centered on independent practice, the residency also allows for informal exchange among artists. Shared spaces create opportunities for conversation and feedback, while maintaining respect for individual working rhythms.

The Japanese-style room includes a tokonoma alcove, which may be used as part of the working or display process. Artists may choose to explore formats such as kakejiku (hanging scrolls) or other approaches related to traditional modes of presentation.

In limited cases, partial financial support or reduced fees may be offered to assist artists whose participation aligns closely with the program’s aims or who face financial constraints.

Any financial support is determined on a case-by-case basis and does not constitute a grant or stipend. Availability of support may vary depending on the residency period and available resources.

Notes on the Residency Model

Tokonomato is not a grant-based or instructional residency. Fees support the maintenance and operation of studios, accommodation, and exhibition spaces, allowing the residency to function sustainably while remaining artist-run.
